The Normal Police Department is increasing speed enforcement throughout July as part of a statewide traffic safety campaign aimed at reducing speeding-related crashes.
In partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police and more than 200 law enforcement agencies across Illinois, officers will conduct increased patrols targeting speeding and other traffic violations.
Police are reminding motorists to obey posted speed limits, allow extra travel time, slow down in school zones, neighborhoods and construction areas, and adjust speeds for weather and traffic conditions. Officials also encourage drivers to avoid distractions, watch for pedestrians and bicyclists, and remember that higher speeds reduce reaction time, increase stopping distance and make crashes more severe.
The July speed enforcement campaign is funded through federal traffic safety grants administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
