The Normal Police Department and Autism McLean have launched a free, voluntary Blue Envelope Program to improve communication between first responders and people with autism, sensory sensitivities or other communication challenges.
The blue envelopes can hold a driver’s license, vehicle information, emergency contacts and communication preferences. During traffic stops or other encounters, the envelope alerts officers that additional communication support or accommodations may be helpful.
Envelopes are available at the Normal Police and Fire departments, Normal Public Library, Lifelong Access, Heartland Community College’s HALO Program, Life Center for Independent Living and Autism McLean. Police say participation does not affect law enforcement procedures and is intended to make interactions safer and less stressful.
