The Normal Police Department is joining more than 200 law enforcement agencies across Illinois in the statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Drive High. Get a DUI” and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns this Labor Day.
From August 14 through the early morning hours of September 8, Normal Police Officers will conduct increased traffic enforcement with an emphasis on impaired driving, seat belt violations, distracted driving and other unsafe driving behaviors. During the enforcement period, Officers will be watching for motorists driving under the influence of alcohol, cannabis or other impairing substances. Drivers are reminded that impairment can affect judgment, reaction time and the ability to safely operate a vehicle.
The Normal Police Department will also focus on seat belt enforcement as part of the “Click It or Ticket” initiative. Seat belts remain one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of serious injury or death in a crash. All occupants, whether seated in the front or back, should be properly restrained on every trip.
As Labor Day approaches, motorists are encouraged to make responsible transportation plans before celebrations begin. Anyone consuming alcohol, cannabis or other impairing substances should arrange for a sober driver, use a rideshare or taxi service, or make other plans to avoid driving impaired. Motorists can also help keep roadways safe by eliminating distractions, obeying posted speed limits and ensuring everyone in the vehicle is properly buckled.
The Labor Day enforcement effort is supported by the Illinois Department of Transportation with federal highway safety funds. The statewide initiative is reinforced by IDOT’s “It’s Not a Game” media campaign, which highlights the potentially deadly consequences of impaired and unsafe driving.
