The Town of Normal declared a local disaster emergency following the severe storm that hit the Normal, Bloomington and McLean County areas on Thursday, Aug. 13. Town crews continue to respond throughout.
“Normal residents and businesses sustained significant damage from downed trees, widespread power outages and structural damage to numerous properties,” says Town of Normal Mayor Chris Koos. “We appreciate crews working to restore power in our community. Town crews have worked tirelessly to clear roadways. We thank everyone for their patience throughout the cleanup.”
The emergency declaration activates the appropriate response and recovery aspects of all applicable local and inter-jurisdictional disaster emergency plans and authorizes the furnishing of aid and assistance as necessary.
Crews continue cleanup efforts of trees and branches blocking roadways. The Town cautions residents and business owners to use extreme caution during cleanup and recovery efforts, assuming any downed power line could be live.

Services and Roads
The Town is picking up trash and recycling as scheduled. Landscape waste and bulky item pickup has been suspended to allow crews to focus on brush collection.
As always, drivers should use caution. Crews moved branches and debris to the side to clear roads and will return to pick these up.
Some roads remain blocked due to construction started before the storm:
- Fell Avenue
- Northbound Linden Street from Emerson to Virginia
- Adelaide at Major Street and south of Warriner
Other roads will re-open as branches and debris are removed from power lines.
