Former Sangamon County Sheriff’s deputy Sean Grayson, convicted of killing Sonya Massey in 2024, died Saturday, Aug. 23. Grayson was being held out of state while serving a 20-year sentence
Grayson was convicted of second-degree murder in October and sentenced to the maximum term in January. He had sought early release because of advanced cancer, but the Illinois Prisoner Review Board denied his request in a 3-0 vote earlier this month.
The case drew national attention after Grayson fatally shot the 36-year-old mother of two in her home on July 6, 2024. Massey had called 911 to report a possible intruder. Body-camera video showed Grayson threatening Massey before shooting her in the face.
