(The Center Square) – A new regional transportation hub is now open in Carbondale. The Southern Illinois Multimodal Station was fueled by $18.4 million from federal taxpayers, $2.8 million from state taxpayers and $5 million from the city of Carbondale.
The station includes Amtrak, Greyhound, FlixBus, JAX Mass Transit, regional transit providers, bicycle and pedestrian connections, and Southern Illinois University’s welcome center.
TREASURER’S OFFICE REPORTS FY 2026 EARNINGS
The Illinois treasurer’s office made $1.45 billion in investment earnings from the state investment portfolio during fiscal year 2026, according to a statement from Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs.
The agency said it made nearly $759 million in gross investment earnings for cities, school districts, counties and other units of government through the Illinois Funds local government investment pool.
ST. CLAIR COUNTY TAX PREPARER SENTENCED
A St. Clair County tax preparer has been sentenced to three years plus one month in prison and ordered to pay over $700,000 in restitution for filing hundreds of false tax returns.
Dormeshia A. Haire, 38, pleaded guilty in April 2026. Prosecutors said Haire was indicted in April 2024 but continued filing false returns while on bond.
GROUNDBREAKING HELD FOR $580 MILLION CHICAGO DEVELOPMENT
Chicago officials have broken ground on a $580 million mixed-use development on the city’s South Side.
The Woodlawn Central project is expected to include up to 1,000 residential units, a hotel, retail and office space, cultural and performance space, and an urban farm.
A statement from Mayor Brandon Johnson’s office said the church-led development will transform about 8 acres surrounding the Apostolic Church of God into a walkable district along the 63rd Street corridor.
