The Normal Police Department conducted more than 116 hours of additional traffic enforcement during a statewide Labor Day safety campaign targeting impaired, distracted and unsafe driving.
The grant-funded campaign, which ran from Aug. 14 through the early morning hours of Sept. 8, included 22 enforcement details. Officers made 114 traffic stops and issued 123 citations.
Speeding accounted for 62 citations, while officers issued 17 citations for distracted driving and seven for seat belt violations. Another 37 citations were issued for other traffic offenses.
Officers also made eight arrests, including one for driving under the influence of drugs and two for driving while a license was suspended. Five additional criminal arrests involved aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, cannabis offenses and two outstanding warrants.
The Normal Police Department participated in the statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Drive High. Get a DUI” and “Click It or Ticket” initiatives, which involved more than 200 law enforcement agencies across Illinois.
The campaign was supported by the Illinois Department of Transportation with federal highway safety funds and reinforced by IDOT’s “It’s Not a Game” media campaign.
Police are reminding motorists to buckle up, obey speed limits, avoid distractions and never drive while impaired.
