$46 million Chicago project brings 51 affordable homes
Fueled by city taxpayers, a newly-completed $46 million project is adding 51 affordable homes to Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood.
Officials cut the ribbon on Friday at United Yards 1A. According to Mayor Brandon Johnson’s office, the city provided up to $25 million in tax-exempt bonds, approximately $14.5 million in tax increment financing funds, and Chicago Recovery Plan resources.
Report: Woman had active warrant when 7-year-old killed
Court records show a woman charged with fatally stabbing a 7-year-old girl in Chicago on Saturday had an active felony arrest warrant since February 2025.
CWB Chicago reports that Shavon Gayden, 48, received a sentence of court supervision after pleading guilty to the November 2024 aggravated battery of a CTA bus driver and separate battery and assault charges from a December 2024 incident.
Gayden was scheduled to appear in court on Monday after she was charged with killing Eddimar Hernandez Chacon, 7, on Saturday morning.
Washington Park homicide suspects arrested
Two people are charged with the August murder of a St. Louis man in Washington Park.
Illinois State Police arrested 18-year-old Brandon Bland Jr. of East St. Louis and Maliyah Lancaster, 19, of Washington Park last Thursday in connection with a shooting and crash that killed Eric Swearengen, 22, of St. Louis on August 1.
Mortgage rates rise
According to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, average fixed mortgage rates rose in the week ending Oct. 1, to 7.3% for the 30-year and 6.6% for the 15-year, the highest levels since November 2023.
