Steve Suess, Chair of the McLean County Libertarian Party, announced he will be running for Chair of the Libertarian Party of Illinois Wednesday night at the monthly McLean County Libertarian Party meeting. Elections for the state party will take place in spring 2020.
“This was not a decision I made with personal ambition in mind,” said Suess.
“As I thought about how I could best use my time, knowledge, talent, and resources for the cause of liberty, this was the decision I kept arriving at. We have grown a considerable amount since I’ve joined the Libertarian Party. Our tent is bigger, and the Libertarian Party is more ideologically diverse. Now it’s time for all of us to come together and move the cause of liberty forward, and I believe I can help accomplish that goal.”
As Suess runs for LP Illinois Chair, he will not officially step down as Chair of the McLean County Libertarian Executive Committee. McLean County LP Executive Committee member at-large Kevin Woodard will assume the role of Chair Pro Tempore, filling in when Suess is unavailable to meet the demands of the growing county party. Woodard ran for McLean County Board as a Libertarian in 2018 and has been the Chair of the Member Recruitment Committee since February. The McLean County Libertarian Party will also elect new leadership in the spring.
