With early and absentee voting set to start on February 6, U.S. Congressman Rodney Davis (R-Taylorville), and Illinois State Representative Dan Brady (R-Normal) along with other Illinois House Republicans today demanded immediate action to preserve the integrity of the March 17 primary election.
On December 18, the Illinois Secretary of State’s office notified the State Board of Elections that a “programming error” led to well over 500 non-citizens being registered to vote over a 17-month period. The letter was not made public until last week.
“We hear time and time again from our colleagues on the other side of the aisle how vital it is to protect the integrity of our elections. Now we have learned that Illinois Democrats implemented a program that has been registering hundreds of non-citizens to vote in Illinois” Rep. Brady said. “This is against both state and federal law and must be corrected immediately.”
According to the State Board of Elections, during the 17-month period when non-eligible voters were added to the rolls, 19 ballots were cast by the individuals registered in error.
“Once these illegitimate votes are cast, they count. They cannot be tracked and discarded. Early and absentee voting begins again in just a few weeks. We must move quickly to make sure this doesn’t happen again,” Rep. Brady said.
Brady said House Republicans who serve on the House Executive Committee have sent a letter to Speaker Mike Madigan asking for an immediate hearing of the Committee to investigate the situation and hear testimony directly from those involved with the improper implementation of Illinois’ automatic voter registration law.
“This situation needs to be fully investigated and those responsible held accountable. The people of Illinois deserve to have confidence in our electoral process and know that only eligible voters are casting ballots,” Brady concluded.
