A Rockford lawmaker is pitching a bill that would implement new rules for the use of Native American mascots in Illinois schools.
The proposed bill is an amendment to the Interscholastic Athletic Organization Act. The rules would require consent from local tribes before using Native American mascots and logos.
The schools would also have to provide education on Native American history and culture in order to participate in playoff-level competition.
