Scammers are trying to pass themselves off as official coronavirus contact tracers.
Illinois State Police (ISP) issued a warning over the weekend about people receiving text messages from scammers pretending to be contact tracers.
In the posted example, ISP showed a photo of a text that read, “Someone who came in contact with you tested positive or has shown symptoms for COVID-19 & recommends you self-isolate/get tested. More at COVID-19anon.com/alert”
ISP warns that if you receive a text message like that, you should not click the link.
It is not a message from any official agency.
ISP says it is a gateway for thieves to find their way into your world.
If you have any questions about COVID-19, you should contact your local public health department.
If you believe you have been the victim or the target of a contact tracing scam you can report it to the BBB’s Scam Tracker to let others in your community know, and you can file a complaint with the FTC, and your local police department.
