
Normal Police Department reminds the public that a Public Call in Session will be held on Tuesday April 13, 2021 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. for comments.
Since 1994, the Normal Police Department has successfully maintained accreditation by the Commission on
Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), a prestigious recognition of law enforcement professional excellence.
Beginning April 12, 2021, a team of CALEA assessors will begin a virtual onsite examination of all aspects of the
Normal Police Department policies and procedures, management, operations, and support services. The assessors will verify that the Normal Police Department meets more than 450 CALEA state-of-the-art standards as part of this
voluntary reaccreditation process. Accreditation is for four years, during which the Normal Police Department must
submit annual reports detailing our continued compliance with the standards, accompanied by a policy review by
CALEA staff.
The CALEA Program Manager for the Normal Police Department is Dan Shaw, and the assessment team is composed
of law enforcement practitioners from similar sized agencies from outside of Illinois. The assessors review written
materials; conduct personal interviews; and visit (virtually) physical locations where compliance can be witnessed.
The assessors for our on-site are Gregg Jones, Retired Commander, Lexington Police Department and Aaron Schafer,
Lieutenant with St. Louis County Police Department. Once the assessors complete their review of the agency, a
comprehensive report is prepared for the full board of Commissioners. The Commission will review all available
information and make a determination on whether the agency will receive reaccreditation.
A critical part of the on-site assessment is the opportunity for the public and agency employees to offer comments on
the agency’s services and performance. This will be accomplished at a public call-in session, which will be held on
April 13, 2021 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. The public may call (309)454-9618. Telephone comments are limited to 10 minutes mand must address the agency’s ability to comply with the CALEA standards.
