At about 6:45am Thursday, the Bloomington Police Department was notified of a threat of gun violence at an unspecified area school. Bloomington Police officers responded to all schools as the investigation continued.
During the investigation, it was determined this was an act of “Swatting.” Contact was made with the individual allegedly making the threat. After speaking with the subject provided by the “swatter,” it was determined this was not a credible threat to any of the area schools.
“Swatting” is defined by state statute as follows: Transmits or causes to be transmitted in any manner a threat of destruction of a school building or school property, or a threat of violence, death or, bodily harm directed against persons at a school, school function, or school event, whether or not school is in session. Swatting is a class 4 felony. If convicted, reimbursement of up to $10,000 to the public agency responding.
