At the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) conference in New York City recently, ECTV took top honors in the category of Best Video Play by Play for its coverage of Eureka College men’s and women’s basketball. Individuals recognized were seniors Spencer Davis (Emden) and Joshua Howard (Springfield), and junior Kareem Burnett (Chicago). Davis also took top honors in the category of Best Sports Director – Television.
Eureka was also a top five finalist in the categories of Best Commercial, Best Show Promotional Poster, Best Television Promotional Announcement, Best Show Open, Best Sports Interview, and Best Station Manager – Radio. Eureka was the only college in Illinois to win in two categories. Six other institutions in Illinois took first place in one category.
“I am so proud of our students and the faculty who support them. It is wonderful to see their hard work and talent recognized by the IBS,” stated Dr. Ann Fulop, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs. “The hands-on experience in radio and TV broadcasting offered to students from their very first semester, and their dedication to learning these skills give them a competitive advantage.”
Eureka College introduced television and radio into the College’s Communication and Media Studies program in 2022. The program won first place in one category at last year’s IBS awards competition.
“I always have to remind myself that being first among a long list of colleges, both large and small, is an incredible honor,” said Dr. John Malone, Eureka College Associate Professor of Communication and Radio/Television General Manager. “It’s confirmation from our peers that we are providing something worthwhile and very special.”
In the play-by-play category, Eureka bested other finalists Arkansas State University, University of West Georgia, Lasell University, and Goshen College.
Founded in 1940, the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System is the oldest student media organization in the United States with more than 1,000 non-profit educational-affiliated radio and television stations.
