The Children’s Discovery Museum hosts celebration for International Day of Women and Girls in Science taking place 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., Saturday, Feb 8.
The celebration of Women and Girls in Science features more than 10 local science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) organizations and influential women with careers in science. Each expert brings an interactive experience for children to engage in hands-on activities or experiments.
All ages are welcome to participate in the activities and unique career exploration opportunity free with museum admission. Families enrolled in Museums For All are invited to the Museum with free admission sponsored by STG Design.
On the goal of the event, Education Director Nick Papineau says, “We want girls in our community to know the different pathways STEAM careers can lead them if they choose. And, we want to celebrate who blazed the trail for them.”
Participating organizations include STG Design, various Illinois State University academic departments, State Farm, Experimental Aircraft Association 129, Illinois Soybean Association Agronomy, Girl Scouts of Central Illinois, Constellation: Clinton Clean Energy Center, Rivian, McLean County Farm Bureau, Miller Park Zoo and more.
Professional females attending will represent careers in architecture, nursing, computer science, agriculture, energy, chemistry, animal health and science, aviation, forestry, conservation, robotics, weather and neuroscience.
“Our second International Women & Girls in Science event demonstrates our dedication to the entire community. We are celebrating the fantastic accomplishments of women in STEAM careers locally and beyond,” says Papineau.
International Day of Women and Girls in Science is recognized internationally on Feb. 11, first established in 2015 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and UN Women. This year marks the 10th annual international anniversary.
