Miller Park Zoo is grieving the loss of two cherished residents, Tocino and Chia, a bonded pair of Goeldi’s monkeys who were euthanized following serious health complications. The announcement comes just days after the zoo shared news of another loss, deepening the sorrow felt by staff and visitors.
Tocino, age 10, had been battling chronic gastrointestinal issues for over a year, while Chia, age 13, was recently diagnosed with aggressive masses in her liver and uterus, along with severe spinal arthritis. Despite extensive medical care and supportive treatment, both monkeys’ conditions deteriorated rapidly, leaving no viable options for recovery.
The zoo’s veterinary and animal care teams made the heartbreaking decision to euthanize the pair, who were known for their gentle personalities and close bond. Zookeepers fondly recalled their vocal calls, affectionate grooming sessions, and their favorite spot by the heat lamp.
Postmortem examinations are underway, with results expected in the coming weeks. The zoo expressed deep appreciation for the community’s support and asked for compassion toward the staff who cared for Tocino and Chia daily.
