Fire crews responded early Monday morning after a car crashed into Kohl’s Department Store at Eastland Mall, igniting a fire that spread into the building.
According to the Bloomington Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched at 3:58 a.m. to 1615 E. Empire Street. The first units arrived two minutes later to find a vehicle on fire, partially inside the store.
No one was found inside the car, but the blaze had extended into the building’s structure. Additional units were called in, and a full recall of off-duty firefighters was later requested to help contain the fire.
As of Monday morning, crews remained on scene working to extinguish flames in hidden areas along the exterior wall, using hand tools and saws to access the roof.
No details have been released on the driver’s condition, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
