New tax increases in the Town of Normal will take effect April 1, raising both food and beverage and hotel/motel rates to help fund a major infrastructure project.
The food and beverage tax will increase from 2% to 2.25%, while the hotel and motel tax will rise from 6% to 8%. Town officials approved the changes in November to help cover $12 million in debt tied to a planned pedestrian underpass connecting Uptown to future development south of the district and improving access for Amtrak passengers.
With the adjustment, the total sales tax on prepared food and drinks in Normal will climb to 12%.
