Debbie Coffman, known as “Coach K,” has announced her retirement as head coach of the girls basketball program at Central Catholic High School after 28 years leading the team and 32 years overall in coaching. Coffman informed school officials and players Wednesday, citing gratitude for the relationships and experiences built throughout her career.
Coffman leaves behind one of the most successful programs in Illinois high school basketball, compiling a 634-204 record with no losing seasons. Her accomplishments include a state championship in 2010, two state runner-up finishes, 17 regional titles, and 12 conference championships. She also ranks among the top 15 winningest coaches in Illinois High School Association girls basketball history and is a member of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
Athletic Director Nate Thomas credited Coffman with building a consistently competitive program and mentoring generations of student-athletes. School officials say a search for the program’s next head coach will begin in the coming weeks.
