The Normal Police Department has concluded its July Speed Awareness Campaign, reporting 274 traffic stops and 261 citations during 40 targeted enforcement details.
Officers devoted more than 206 hours to speed enforcement, issuing 238 speeding citations, four distracted-driving citations and 24 other traffic citations. Police also made five arrests, including one for DUI and two criminal arrests involving methamphetamine and unlawful possession of a Taser.
Police say even small reductions in speed can reduce the likelihood and severity of crashes and are reminding drivers to obey speed limits, avoid distractions and drive responsibly. The campaign was funded through federal highway safety funds administered by IDOT.
