Cook County property tax bills to rise
A new report from Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas’ office found property taxes have gone up again.
County residents are expected to pay $593.4 million in new taxes, 5.3% more than they paid in the previous year, according to the report. Commercial, industrial and large multifamily properties are expected to pay an additional $143.2 million, or 1.8% more than last year.
The report also detailed that nearly 1.3 million homeowners will see their property tax bill go up, while 226,000 are expected to have theirs go down. 2025 property tax bills are expected to be sent out to residents at the end of August.
ISP pursues new lead in 34-year-old kidnapping, murder case
The Illinois State Police and FBI announced Monday they have a new lead in the 1992 kidnapping and murder case of Tammy J. Zywicki, a 21-year-old Evanston woman, 34 years to date after her disappearance.
Evidence suggests that a truck driver was seen near Zywicki’s vehicle around the time it was abandoned, and investigators are looking for information about a woman, Theresa “Teri” Belenske, who was reportedly known to hitchhike and may have traveled with the unknown truck driver prior to Zywicki’s death.
Belenske died in 2014, but agents are seeking any information about her from the 1980s to 1990s. Anyone with information about the case was asked to contact ISP’s investigative tips webpage or call 1-800-CALL-FBI.
Aurora veteran service office to host open house
The Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs is marking the opening of its new itinerate veteran service in Aurora with a resource fair and open house on Thursday, August 27, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at American Legion Post 84.
IDVA says veteran service officers will be on site to help veterans and their families navigate state and federal benefits and file claims.
Representatives from Rush University’s Road Home, the Veterans Legal Aid Society, Hines VA Medical Center Outreach, Honor Flight Chicago, and the Northeast DuPage Special Recreation Association are also scheduled to be in attendance.
