Bloomington’s Labor Day Parade will march on Monday, September 7, at 10 a.m. This year’s theme is “Solidarity for the Next 250.”
The annual parade features union marching units, Illinois State University’s “Big Red Marching Machine,” high school bands, community organizations, and local elected officials, plus political aspirants. It is sponsored by the Bloomington & Normal Trades & Labor Assembly (AFL-CIO).
“With the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we honor the united human spirit that founded this nation and pledge ourselves to continued solidarity for the future,” said Jason Pascal, Bloomington & Normal Trades & Labor Assembly President. “Working people like Crispus Attucks and Paul Revere were critical to this nation’s beginning. Uniting, the world was changed, and we continue our spirit of human solidarity for a better community.”
The parade will assemble on Front Street in downtown Bloomington and proceed south on Lee Street to Wood Street, ending at Miller Park.
Almost 150 years ago, the Bloomington & Normal Trades & Labor Assembly was founded in the 1880s to bring local unions together for the common good. It has over 30 affiliated local unions and includes worker organizations from McLean, Livingston, DeWitt, and Logan counties. It is affiliated with the Illinois AFL-CIO and the national AFL-CIO.
