Pritzker order allows on-rooad use of dyed diesel
Following President Donald Trump’s order temporarily waiving tax penalties for using dyed diesel fuel on public highways, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker directed state officials to allow on-road use of the fuel typically used for agricultural purposes. On Tuesday, Pritzker issued an executive order directing the Illinois Department of Revenue and Illinois State Police not to impose state penalties when dyed diesel from bulk storage is sold or used on highways and state roads for farming and agriculture through December 31, 2026.
The governor also issued a state disaster proclamation for all 102 Illinois counties in response to high diesel prices. The average price for a gallon of diesel in Illinois on Wednesday was $6.64 per gallon. The national average is $6.30.
Under Trump’s directive, the Internal Revenue Service will waive through Dec. 31 the 24.4-cent-per-gallon federal excise tax charged on purchases of on-highway diesel fuel, which is undyed.
